January 18, 2017 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org – According to a just released report by the Russian government friendly television network RT:
“A large group of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants have been making massive advances in Deir ez-Zor province, cutting off a key air base supplying both anti-jihadist fighters and civilians in the region.” [source, ISIS cut off Deir ez-Zor airbase, threaten 120,000 civilians , RT]
The Iranian state run Fars agency reports much the same, but adding that given the precise nature of the ISIS operation, that satellite imagery must have been used, while opining that Team Obama is the source of the information
“A prominent military analyst said the US has provided the ISIL with aerial and satellite images of the Syrian army positions in Deir Ezzur to be used in the terrorist group's offensives…ISIL intends to take full control of Deir Ezzur city and vast regions in Syria's desert from South of Sweida up to Palmyra in Homs and from Raqqa to Deir Ezzur to take control of Syria's border with Iraq. [source, Syrian Analyst: US Providing Satellite Images to ISIL for Deir Ezzur Attack , Fars]
Deir Ezzur is in South East Syria and it being taken over by ISIS should be a serious concern for Iraq’s ISF which has spent nearly two years trying to retake the North Eastern Iraqi metropolis of Mosul.
Far from fading away as a potent land army, ISIS’ campaigns in both Syria and Iraq are sophisticated with the enemy showing sufficient tactical sense to tie up large numbers ISF/Iranian fighters in seeming never ending sieges such as that of Mosul which leaves other, perhaps more strategic territories essentially undefended.
Absent a concerted effort by the United States it’s difficult to imagine that ISIS will ever be eliminated as a major Islamist fighting force in the area since it has the advantages of more committed fighters [the majority of Iraqi soldiers are cowards] better logistics and the nimbleness required to quickly react and counter-attack when one of its main positions is threatened.
As to the Iranian claim that the U.S. is providing satellite intel to ISIS, normally we would dismiss that out of hand as typical of Tehran’s usual bluster, but given the action of the outgoing Obama administration it’s unfortunately not something that can so easily be ruled out.
