U.S. Army National Guard Soldier and His Cousin Arrested for Conspiring to Support Terrorism

March 31, 2015 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org – According to the FBI, two Aurora, Illinois, men [Hasan and Jonas Edmonds, cousin] were arrested on the evening of the 25th for allegedly conspiring to provide material support to ISIS, a designated FTO.

The two conspired to engage in a plan wherein Hasan, who was a member of the Illinois National Guard [Army National Guard Specialist] would access military uniforms and weapons before they attacked a military installation in northern Illinois with grenades and battle rifles.

If the plan had succeeded as many as 150 soldiers could have been killed.

22 year old Hasan Edmonds was arrested without incident at Chicago’s Midway International Airport by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force [JTTF] He had planned to fly to Cairo and from there to Syria to provide military expertise to ISIS. 29 year old Jonas Edmonds was arrested without incident at his home in Aurora.

Both defendants were charged with one count of conspiring to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization. The two were arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheila Finnegan.

As stated in the complaint, “the defendants allegedly conspired to provide material support to ISIL and planned to travel overseas to support the terrorist organization…In addition, they plotted to attack members of our military within the United States. Disturbingly, one of the defendants currently wears the same uniform of those they allegedly planned to attack. I want to thank the many agents, analysts, and prosecutors who are responsible for disrupting the threat posed by these defendants.”

The charge of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
