Basim Elkarra, CAIR Sacramento Director, Runs For Twin Rivers School Board

April 29, 2015 – San Francisco, CA – – There seems to be a bit of controversy surrounding Basim Elkarra’s run for the Sacramento area’s Twin Rivers School Board. Knowing Elkarra's MO, we find it unsurprising that something of this nature might surface in such close proximity to the election.

Only the facts ma’am…

As was reported by the local media, a political flyer, of unknown origin, was circulated - in unknown quantities - the content of which was immediately deemed by that august group, to be an “ethnic,” “religious,” “racist” smear.

Not having seen all of the documents associated with this allegation, we’re reserving judgment as to how it should be characterized, though of course if the flyer is truly defamatory in Mr. Elkarra’s opinion, he should pursue whatever legal avenues he has available to resolve the issue to his satisfaction.

Regarding the flyer, we find it oddly coincidental that a document of this nature would simply materialize knowing the predictably knee-jerk reaction with which the Sacramento press would respond – outrage, allegations of bigotry, Islamophobia etc., all of which tend to cast Mr. Elkarra in the role of victim.

Being a sympathetic figure isn’t a bad place to reside when running for political office.

To be clear, having watched the antics of the Sacramento media over the years we know that it might as well identify itself [call it truth in advertising] as a house organ of the Democrat party, so the rush to judgment, assuming facts not in evidence - that the flyer was legitimate and that it was circulated with defamatory intent - was entirely predictable, given the fact that the candidate has such widespread support among Democrat power-players

“A kickoff reception at The Grand in downtown Sacramento on March 15 generated at least $25,000. Perhaps even more significant was that the fundraiser host list was a virtual who’s who of local Democrats, including state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones; state Sen. Richard Pan; former state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg; Assemblyman Jim Cooper; former Assemblyman Roger Dickinson; Sacramento council members Allen Warren, Steve Hansen and Angelique Ashby; and Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna...” [source, Diana Lambert, Twin Rivers race features charter school operator, Democratic Party activist, Sac Bee]

Note to Sacto journos: “Islamophobia” doesn’t exist in the United States. If for some reason you care to argue the facts, consider first, reviewing the Uniform Crime Statistics which are compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice every year.

That the charge of Islamophobia is an agendized canard, despite major provocations by Islamists and their various domestic Muslim Brotherhood front groups, not to mention 9/11 [which the last time we checked was undertaken entirely by individuals of the Islamic faith] attests to the basic goodness and fair mindedness of the American people. This is one of the reasons why so many Muslims immigrate to the United States in the first place.

In the wider picture, the mysterious nature of the “flyer” is irrelevant, it should have no bearing on the race itself about which we take no position and make no endorsements.

A genuinely serious matter however, remains, which we will address.

Irrespective of his obvious political ambitions, why would Mr. Elkarra associate himself so intimately with the Council on American Islamic Relations? He is, after all, representing the group in Sacramento, as that chapter’s Executive Director and has done so for 10 years. It appears to be his life's work.

Reading what passes for news coverage in this market, it’s as if the Council on American Islamic Relations is an unknown quantity.

We will present the following and let our readers [and of course Sacramento’s legacy version of the Fourth Estate] decide for themselves how CAIR should be judged.

On April 11, 2011, Congressman Peter King drafted a letter to then AG Holder regarding the DOJ’s reluctance to prosecute a very long list of unindicted co-conspirator/joint venturers assembled by the Justice Department in the landmark prosecution of the largest domestic Hamas funding mechanism in the history of the United States, U.S. v Holy Land Foundation for Development et al. The prosecution resulted in all of the defendants being found guilty on a combined 108 counts. It is estimated that at least $12M dollars was raised for Hamas via this fraudulent charity.

“…As you are aware, in a previously sealed Memorandum Opinion Order of July 1, 2009, United States District Judge Jorge A. Solis declined CAIR, ISNA and NAIT’s August 14, 2007 and June 18, 2008 requests to strike their names from the United States Attorney’s list of unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation case. Judge Solis found that the Government has produced ample evidence to establish the associations of CAIR, ISNA and NAIT with [the Holy Land Foundation, “HLF”], the Islamic Association for Palestine (“IAP”), and with Hamas.” The Court found that the evidence was “sufficient to show the association of these entities with HLF, IAP, and Hamas…” [source, Peter King letter to DOJ, emphasis added]

To us this suggests that CAIR has been proven - to the satisfaction of the U.S. Department of Justice - to be associated with the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, which itself is a creation of the Muslim Brotherhood. Perhaps this explains why CAIR was one of the organizations listed among the “Unindicted Co-conspirators and/or Joint Venturers” in the Holy Land prosecution.

We will restate our initial question for emphasis, why has Mr. Elkarra had such a long-standing association with this organization?

End note:

For those who might be interested in further researching the Holy Land Foundation prosecution, surrounding issues [such as CAIR and its leadership] including transcripts of expert testimony presented into evidence, we refer you to: The Investigative Project on Terrorism: US v. Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, et al. Richardson, TX . This is an amazing resource. There are literally dozens of documents encompassing hundreds, if not thousands of pages of trial related material.
