May 29, 2013 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org – Janet Napolitano, of DHS infamy, is all atwitter at the prospect of manufacturing firearms made out plastic through the use of 3-D printers and appropriate working blueprints.
A national security bulletin issued by DHS on the plastic pistols [called Liberators] as revealed by Fox News stated in part:
"Significant advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing capabilities, availability of free digital 3D printer files for firearms components, and difficulty regulating file sharing may present public safety risks from unqualified gun seekers who obtain or manufacture 3D printed guns…" [source, Jana Walker, Homeland Security bulletin warns 3D-printed guns may be 'impossible' to stop’]
According to Nappy, the technology is so fraught with peril that she is raising the hue and cry in hopes of spurring legislators into enacting another useless statute to control what isn’t a problem, the prospect of printers spitting out plastic AR even marginally equivalent to what can be bought in gun stores across most of the U.S. [CA, NY, etc., no guns for you] is remote at present.
Long term, no legislation can possibly contain the spread of groundbreaking technology.
3D printing is by no means a secretive process and more and more items can be made in this fashion, with ambitious plans to construct entire buildings or automobiles within possibility.
Regardless, despite the promise [for good or ill] of the technology this obviously shouldn’t be a front burner issue within the national security establishment.
Never mind that many of the crude weapons made from the above process and firing the anemic .380 [with a low working chamber pressure in the 20k lb. psi - pounds per square inch - range. High power rifles, including ARs must contain chamber pressures well in excess of 55k psi, yield strength on most barrel steels are in the area of 130k psi] the "pistol" exploded near the breech end. Knowing this defect many have wisely chosen to remotely trigger their new little toy, fortunately since they tend to go ka-boom in your hand.
Never mind that one must still use a steel firing pin, thus making the "pistol" detectable on standard airport scanners and if such technology is seriously going to be used in highly stressed tools as firearms, metal or other materials of similar strength will have to be imbedded into the gun to make it at all serviceable.
[Note: Though Gaston Glock revolutionized the semi auto pistol market years ago, when he devised a method of using very strong plastics over an endo-skeleton of various metal parts, most significantly the barrel. However, Glock and its numerous imitators use an injection molding process, not the super high tech 3D printer featured in the making of the "Liberator."]
Never mind that the equipment necessary to fashion this curio is industrial grade and quite expensive [good ones starting at $8,000], thus far out of the reach of average citizens.
Actually, never mind any of this malarkey because DHS is merely trying to shift the subject, so the department’s record of failure, ineptitude and abject stupidity is less obvious.
Remember this is the Secretary [once the idiot governor of Arizona] who has banned all even potentially negative references to Islam in official government communications and documents dealing with terrorism, substituting the totally misleading term, "man caused disasters" in its stead.
And of course the Ft. Hood massacre was simple "work-place violence," not jihad...
Additionally, this is the national security Einstein whose bloated bureaucracy has freely consulted with domestic supporters of Hamas.
So forget about plastic fantastic pistols, because perhaps the most serious threat facing DHS [though shards of these same policies were born during the later GW Bush years] is the presence of Napolitano herself.
For example, the Sect’y has egregiously sought "guidance" on Islamic issues from the most radical Islamist groups in the U.S. [some of which were named as unindicted co-conspirator/fellow travelers in U.S. vs. Holy Land Foundation, wherein a phony Muslim charity was busted for funneling millions to HAMAS] as a result of her indoctrination into Shari'a, Napolitano has been a quite a player in sanitizing the official language of DC with regard to Islam.
Therefore the key terms by which we can identify the enemy - jihad, Islamic terrorism, Muslim radicals, mujahideen etc., have been banned from use.
"The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is refusing to identify the "influential Muslim Americans" and "leading U.S.-based scholars and commentators on Islam" who met with Secretary Michael Chertoff in helping shape a softer approach to government lexicon about terrorists and their ideological motivations.
"Our policy is we don’t comment on the Secretary’s private schedule," spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told the IPT. Nor would she identify any of the participants’ organizational affiliation.
DHS and the State Department’s Counterterrorism Communications Center each issued reports urging government employees to avoid words like "jihad," "mujahedeen" or any reference to Islam or Muslims, especially in relation to Al Qaeda. The Investigative Project on Terrorism is making the documents available for the first time here and here. As we reported last week, the memos say a change in language from the U.S. government is needed to win the hearts and minds of moderate Muslims and avoid glamorizing terrorists motivated by religious ideology. "Moderate" is also frowned upon in the memos, though, with "mainstream" or "traditional" suggested as replacements.
Among the recommendations not reported previously:
* "The experts we consulted debated the word ‘liberty,’ but rejected it because many around the world would discount the term as a buzzword for American hegemony."
* "The fact is that Islam and secular democracy are fully compatible – in fact, they can make each other stronger. Senior officials should emphasize that fact."
* The USG [U.S. government] should draw the conflict lines not between Islam and the West, but between a dangerous, cult-like network of terrorists and everyone who is in support of global security and progress.
So America, after serving for more than two centuries the sanctuary for huddled masses yearning to breathe free, is being asked to minimize liberty against fanatics bent on a global religious state. The memo doesn’t offer examples to show where Islam and secular democracy have reinforced each other, or explain how Shariah law, the imposition of religion into state affairs, is "fully compatible" with secular democracy.
It is no surprise, however, to see the changes praised by the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC)…" [source, Steven Emerson, Investigative Project Releases Gov't Memos Curtailing Speech in War on Terror]
This process has damaged, perhaps beyond repair one of the first principles of military preparedness, identifying potential enemies and their belief systems. This is the same process that was used by the United States [and its serious Western partners such as Great Britain] in the half century conflict – the Cold War - with the Soviet Union. It allowed us to develop a counter strategy, to combat this enemy on many levels, militarily, ideologically and economically, realizing that the Soviet system was creaky and forcing it to compete at such a high level of technology with the U.S. might well induce such a sever long-term strain to the Soviet system as to break it down.
More precisely, the cumulative effect of such a coordinated, broad-based and sustained attack allowed the West to bankrupt the communist empire.
Which of course is exactly what happened, when Gorby capitulated without a shot.
In this sterilized atmosphere of censorship [created by Nappy and her fellow incompetents] the defense establishment is left increasingly rudderless.
The process is ultimately self-defeating, as senior commanding officers retire [as per design or in disgust] and are replaced by drones in the same uniforms who will cleave to the extremist multicultural line the guidelines are no longer needed, dupes having been placed in positions of command.
