UN Veto - A Lesson Well Learned

By WILLIAM MAYER

February 19, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Faced with no alternative and caught in a bind between rhetoric and reality, on Friday, UN Ambassador Rice reluctantly cast Team Obama's first veto in the Security Council, killing a resolution, signed on to by the council's 14 other members, to condemn Israel's so-called "settlements" - actually apartments in Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.

U.S. domestic response has been varied, with liberals using the occasion to dissemble, arguing that this action was the ultimate proof of the president's commitment to Israel.

Conservatives however had a different take, well expressed by Jennifer Rubin in her WashPost column, Right Turn, condemning the action, "...The U.S. did not merely exercise a veto, it issued a statement that was unprecedented in its one-sidedness and harshness..." [see, http://voices.washingtonpost.com/right-turn/2011/02/the_un_veto_and_the_real_headl.html]:

Rice's petulant response, forced to cast this vote despite the administration's already obvious Muslim tilt, was really more than harsh and one-sided. It was a blanket condemnation of the Jewish state accompanied by a level of historical revisionism shocking even by this administration's standards.

In a single carefully crafted sentence dripping with retribution, "For more than four decades Israel's settlement activities have undermined Israel's security and eroded hopes of peace and security in the region," the United States joined in spirit with "...over 120 of the UN's 192 Member States," including the UK, France and Germany. [see, United States vetoes Security Council resolution on Israeli settlements, UN website, http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=37572&Cr=palestin&Cr1=, and U.S. vetoes Security Council resolution denouncing Israeli settlements , WashPost, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/18/AR2011021805442.html]

This was a de-facto sellout of the Israelis.

Hardly mollified by outing the U.S.' anti-Israel bias while at the same time casting America as the great Satan for shelving the measure, the Palestinian's UN observer, Riyad Mansour, stated, "Our overarching goal remains to bring an end to the Israeli colonization and occupation of our land..." With this level of belligerence, even among our supposed European allies, the grand effect of this vote will be to further embolden the Middle East's Islamists, and their front organizations here at home, to redouble their efforts.

And who could blame them? Obama is their best recruiter.

On the surface one might think that this team of bumbling fools hadn't learned a thing from the fires it has fanned throughout the Arab world over the last month or so.

That would be an incorrect assessment, because as Rice was busily stamping her foot in high dudgeon, the administration was using its office to bus union goons into Wisconsin and elsewhere, intent on overturning the last election while preparing to win the next...at any cost...therefore proving Obama to be a remarkably quick study in the effectiveness of street violence, thuggery and mob rule.
