ICNA Materials Promote Jihad at Philly Library Festival

April 19, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - In a previous article entitled "Will ICNA be Allowed to Practice Stealth Jihad at Philadelphia Free Library Festival?" this author wrote, "...the Islamic Circle of North America has no place at the Philadelphia Free Library Festival and the organizers should prevent representatives of the group from plying their trade at the event.[source, https://www.pipelinenews.org/index.cfm?page=icna4.16.10.htm].

The organizers of the festival which took place on April 17th and 18th had been given information on ICNA's questionable associations and were urged not to allow the Islamic Circle of North America to set up a "Da'wah Booth" at the event. Unfortunately, ICNA was permitted to proceed with its plans and one of the publications which was highlighted, printed in English and Spanish, called for jihad.

The book "Towards Understanding Islam" was by Abul A'la Mawdudi a radical Muslim theorist and the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami a radical Islamist group which is believed to have ties to al-Qaeda.

Under the heading "Jihad" Mawdudi wrote the following:

"Jihad is a part of this overall defense of Islam...in the language of the Divine Law, this word is used specifically for the war that is waged solely in the name of God against those who perpetrate oppression as enemies of Islam. This supreme sacrifice is the responsibility of all Muslims...jihad is as much a primary duty as are daily prayers or fasting. One who avoids it is a sinner. His every claim to being a Muslim is doubtful. He is plainly a hypocrite who fails in the tests of sincerity and his acts of worship are a sham, a worthless hollow show of devotion..." [source, Abul A'la Mawdudi, "Towards Understanding Islam," pg. 124-125]

ICNA was also giving away copies of the Qur'an in which the entry for "Christians and Jews" appeared in the index with references to "accursed" and "enmity to the believers."

Among the many pamphlets which ICNA offered was one entitled "Common Concerns About Islam." For example, next to the the heading "Hijab" was written "A Liberation" and the entry entitled "Polygamy" stated that, "For unmarried women who cannot find husbands and widows who aspire to a respectable family life, polygamy is often an acceptable alternative." Similarly, another entry on Jihad [pgs.4 and 8] contains the the following - "Physical Jihad, which involves collective armed self -defense as well as retribution against tyranny, exploitation and oppression" - then concludes, "It is clear from the foregoing discussion that Jihad is a vast concept that encompasses various spheres of activity all directed at the betterment of self and society."

By allowing ICNA to participate in the Philadelphia Free Library Festival the organizers have betrayed their own mission statement which says that "The Free Library will create a welcoming and inspiring environment for learning and will promote individual enlightenment, community enrichment, and economic vitality throughout the region." [source, http://www.library.phila.gov/about/role.htm#flp]

Instead of aiding community enrichment library officials who made this ill-advised decision have inadvertently contributed to spreading of a virulent doctrine at odds with American national security concerns.
