...The War of the Spooks Against the Administration Continues, with an Ominous New Twist...
By William Mayer
December 5, 2007 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - The Congressional Democrat leadership, not to mention the party's hopefuls in the 2008 presidential campaign, are all assiduously avoiding any public mention of what have become the politically loaded terms, radical Islam, jihadism, the Islamist threat or...perish the thought, Islamofascism.
It's not difficult to understand the logic behind that stance.
Since opposition to the war in Iraq is an integral, perhaps central component of their foreign policy, it's necessary to reject and/or ignore the existence of an ideology based upon an interpretation of Islam, which looms as a major challenge to national security, because acceptance thereof would constitute a contradiction of embarrassing proportions.
Therefore, acknowledging the existence of such a movement, sworn to destroy the West is more than an inconvenience to the Democrat world view, it's anathema. Adoption of this head-in-the-sand approach allows Democrats to oppose as unnecessarily confrontational and inappropriate, the hot war offensive against practitioners of Islamic terror.
Though it's troubling to believe that Hillary Clinton and the Democrats are as ignorant on the subject as their public pronouncements seem to indicate, if we are to take them at their word, the people and organizations which have sworn our destruction are just bad players, freebooters who operate independently, with no larger unifying ideology. It stands to reason then that the proper response to this - adjudged, non-ideologically driven - terrorism should be pursued in what amounts to police actions, with all the attending complexities of building legal cases against the perpetrators and prosecuting them in judicial settings, not on battlefields.
Working along parallel lines, domestic stealth jihadists such as CAIR have been advancing the canard that the use of Islamofascism as a descriptor is inherently Islamophobic. This allegation is at the core of a major effort put forth by the organization [an unindicted co conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation prosecution] to brand critics of itself and Islamic fundamentalism as bigoted, haters of Muslims.
Towards that end, the group has been staging "Islamophobia" workshops for the last month nationwide. On November 13 CAIR held a press conference in Washington to announce a component of that campaign, "a major initiative to help enhance understanding of Islam and Muslims in the news media," as if the American media was not already multiculturally hog tied enough into believing CAIR's numerous fabrications.
Not oblivious to the similarity and ideological friendliness between the party lines of the Democrats and the Islamists, members of Hillary Clinton's foreign policy team have now wholly adopted CAIR's position on Islamofascism, thus finding common ground with what is widely understood in the counter-terrorism community to be a Saudi Wahhabist funded Hamas mouthpiece.
In the November 29 CAIR newsletter we read what is essentially one of the organization's press releases in the guise of a piece of "news analysis" by UPI and headlined, "Report: 'Islamofascism' Blinds U.S.," which reads in part:
"The term 'Islamofascism' dangerously obscures important distinctions and differences between groups of Islamic extremists, says a counter-terror think tank...'Since Sept. 11 conservatives have continually lumped various groups and countries together into one threat that they term 'Islamofascism,' according to the National Security Network, a group of left-leaning former U.S. officials and experts in counter-terrorism and national security. 'The reality is much complicated,' reads their report issued Wednesday. The groups and nations that make up the 'Islamofascist' threat include al-Qaida, al-Qaida in Iraq, Hezbollah, Hamas and the Palestinian government institutions that they control, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic Republic of Iran 'By confusing these various threats, conservatives make it impossible to pursue effective policies,' the report concludes, adding that the approach 'has caused the United States to miss numerous opportunities, where it could have played these groups off of each other to America's benefit...[The term also] creates the perception that the United States is fighting a religious war against Islam, thus alienating moderate voices in the region who would be willing to work with America towards common goals."
What exactly is the National Security Network [NSN], who runs it and whose interests does it serve?
NSN is an integral part of what some have called the "shadow government" of Bill and Hillary Clinton. As we noted in an October 9 piece The Clinton/Soros Thugocracy the Clinton's have constructed an elaborate and sophisticated network of organizations which function as a government in waiting, operating at their behest.
Many of the players in this network - the "progressives" - honed their political skills in the most radical outposts of the anti-Vietnam war movement, including the domestic terrorists at the SDS. Elemental in this group are the McGovernites who captured the Democrat party in 1972, and in short order, academia and the main stream media. They continue to hold all three to this day.
Allied with these long time activists and working to advance a common agenda with them are a band of renegades, all Clinton appointees, many of whom burrowed deep into the George W. Bush administration with the intent of undermining it from the interior via an historically unprecedented campaign of harmful, often clearly illegal intelligence disclosures to the New York Times, the Washington Post and other members of the entrenched press.
It is these Clintonistas which constitute the NSN, starting with its president, Rand Beers.
Beers is a former NSC member, recruited by Richard Clark and had only been a member of G.W. Bush's NSC team since August 2002, when he, in one of the first salvos against the Bush war on terror, dramatically and with much recrimination, resigned his position just five days before the commencement of "Operation Iraqi Freedom."
The timing necessary to pull off the Beers operation - the joining and then rapid, loud departure - seems to confirm suspicions that it was Beers' intent from the beginning to serve as a mole, then emerge to help torpedo the war on terror. This feeling was compounded even more when only weeks later Beers signed on as a foreign policy advisor to the Kerry campaign.
As Paul C. Light, a scholar at the liberal Brookings Institution warned darkly about Beers' defection:
"I can't think of a single example in the last 30 years of a person who has done something so extreme...He's not just declaring that he's a Democrat. He's declaring that he's a Kerry Democrat, and the way he wants to make a difference in the world is to get his former boss out of office." 1.
Not only did Beers join the Kerry team, it is reported that he was in charge of the candidate's operation to coordinate the storm of intelligence leaks. It has also recently come to light that Richard Clark, while still on the NSC team, unbelievably attempted to reinstate Beers' security clearance in order to give the Kerry campaign direct access to the same intelligence to which the president had.
"The Kerry campaign set up a war room to exploit leaks from the intelligence community. It was run by Rand Beers, a Clinton administration appointee who burrowed into the National Security Council under Bush, thanks to Richard Clark." [source, "Shadow Warriors, Kenneth R. Timmerman, p 177]
Other members of Beers' NSN constitute the core of the Clinton foreign policy establishment, including Sandy Berger, the disgraced document thief and Clinton's incompetent National Security Advisor. Also included is Richard Holbrooke, a long time advisor to Democrat presidencies. Holbrooke was the odds on choice to serve as Kerry's Secretary of State.
An NSN "Director and Organizational Leader," Rose Brooks, is on leave from Georgetown University, she also serves as a, "Special Counsel" to George Soros' Open Society Institute, thus completing the loop back to the Clinton's key financier.
General Wesley Clark also serves on the NSN Advisory Board. Clark is a former Democrat presidential candidate and infamous for his brinkmanship and near starting of a war with Russia, as Clinton's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and commander of NATO forces in the Balkans.
Marc Ginzberg is an NSN "Director and Organizational Leader." He is the former U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, served as Clinton's Deputy Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs and was a Middle East foreign policy advisor to Senator Edward Kennedy.
NSN's treasurer is Daniel Feldman - former Clinton White House National Security Council director of Multilateral and Humanitarian Affairs.Frank Lowenstein, NSN's Secretary served along with Beers as a national security advisor for the Kerry team.
The foregoing should establish that the National Security Network's ties to the Clinton machine are undeniable.
Taken as a whole, the NSN report is hardly more than a collection of haphazardly strung together press clippings, from leftist sources and totaling barely 1,000 words [see http://www.nsnetwork.org/node/215]. The study is bereft of any real analysis and appears to have been organized for the sole purpose of impugning GOP frontrunners, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, neither of whom have been reticent to use the term "Islamofascism."
This Clinton/CAIR philosophical nexus has been employed to provide some additional measure of justification for a December 13 press conference to be held in the National Press Club by the organization, which will advance the corollary to the Islamofascism critique, that Islamophobia is rampant in America.
Presenters of this thesis, will be Peter Gottschalk and Gabriel Greenberg, coauthors of "Islamophobia: Making Muslims the Enemy."Gottschalk is a leftist economist from Boston College 2. having authored such works as "America Unequal" and "Uneven Tides," Greenberg is a cartoon artist, so it strains credulity to imagine what in their respective CVs, makes them credible voices on the subject of "Islamophobia."
As if to bear that out, their work breaks no new ground, merely recapitulating the allegation that fear of Muslims is completely irrational, borne out of a necessity of the West to demonize Islam for economic benefit.
"The answer points to a history-as old as Islam itself-of confrontation between an overwhelmingly Christian Europe and predominantly Muslim Middle East over economic resources, political power and religious sites...Europeans came to negatively portray Muslims so effectively and so universally that the terms "Islam and "Muslim" have come to inherently evoke suspicion and fear on the part of many." [source, "Islamophobia, Making Muslims The Enemy," p. 4, http://books.google.com/books?id=OZFlomJ5E4wC&pg=PA5&lpg=PA5&dq=gabriel+greenberg+islamophobia&source=web&ots=96smD0YaV_&sig=LEMj69vI6yJopTOqu22_Hzywl1I#PPA62,M1]
The shallow, agenda driven nature of this analysis completely ignores the numerous commonalities between the ideologies of fascism and Islamism; their shared anti-Semitism, rejection of materialism and totalitarian/authoritarian style, not to mention the willingness shown personally by Adolph Hitler in allying his cause with that of radical Muslims, from the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, in organizing the murderous SS Nazi Hanjar [Sword] Division in the Balkans during World War II, to his aiding of rebel Chechen Muslims in the Soviet Union during that same time period.
[Note: During the brutal campaign of terror carried out by the Mufti's 20,000 Muslim Nazi soldiers, an estimated 750,000 to 860,000 Serbs, Jews and Gypsies, were killed in what amounted to a demi-holocaust, an extermination which ranks on a per-capita basis as the worst case of genocide in modern European history. See, 10 Years And Counting - Still No Exit Plan From Clinton Created, European Al-Qaeda Base]
It should come as no surprise that CAIR is highly regarded by Gottschalk and Greenberg and hence their front and center status at the press event:
"...the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), is one of the most important Islamic organizations in the United States." [source, p. 8]
Beers having inserted his organization at a key time into what has become a cause célèbre in the Islamist agenda of equating any criticism of political Islam as racist by definition [since their world view posits that, there is no radical Islamist movement] must be seen in a larger context.
He and the NSN are by no means alone, as evidenced as recently as Monday with the outing of the latest revisionist National Intelligence Estimate on Iran [which in large part completely contradicts the previous 2005 NIE] but part of the continuing operation, run by ex-intelligence officers and disloyal national security insiders, designed to embarrass the administration, undercut its moral authority and keeping it always operating in a defensive mode.
As the December 4 edition of the New York Sun states:
"The proper way to read this report is through the lens of the long struggle the professional intelligence community has been waging against the elected civilian administration in Washington. They have opposed President Bush on nearly every major policy decision...It's a dangerous game..." 3.
Close upon the heels of the 2003 Beers defection, the website of Lyndon Larouche became an active player in the intel rebellion, launching an attack against the political philosophy of Leo Strauss, seen as an iconic figure by many modern conservatives.
In the May 16, 2003 edition of Lyndon Larouche's Executive Intelligence review an article, "LaRouche Exposé ofStraussian `Children of Satan' Draws Blood," written by Jeffrey Steinberg [a key player in LaRouche's crazy quilt of interlocking organizations] the author writes, "Just weeks after the LaRouche in 2004 campaign began nationwide circulation of 400,000 copies of the Children of Satan dossier, exposing the role of University of Chicago fascist "philosopher" Leo Strauss as the godfather of the neo-conservative war party in and around the Bush Administration, two major establishment publications have joined in the exposé. On May 4, the New York Times published a long, lead article in the Week in Review section of its nationally read Sunday edition, titled "Leo-Cons" A Classicist's Legacy: New Empire Builders."
Children of Satan is an anti-Semitic screed - harkening back to the Protocols of the elders of Zion - which alleges that "beast men" aka Jewish disciples of Leo Strauss, under the leadership of Dick Cheney have taken over U.S. foreign policy. Strauss' teachings were subjected to this assault [aside from the fact that he was Jewish] because of his stature as a legendary political theorist while at the University of Chicago, as well as having been a severe critic of liberalism, believing it to be nihilistic. Strauss is often said to be the progenitor of "neo-conservatism."
Steinberg also sits on the, "Executive Committee of the International Caucus of Labor Committees" another LaRouche organization.
LaRouche's German born leftist wife Helga Zep LaRouche founded the Schiller Institute, which agitates along the same lines as LaRouche's other organizations and to which Steinberg made a February 20, 2004 presentation, detailing the accusations made in the "Children of Satan..." document.
The enigmatic LaRouche is little known outside of politically informed circles, though he has a 60 plus year history as a revolutionary communist who cut his political teeth as a member of U.S. based Trotskyite organizations. He joined the Socialist Worker's Party in the late 1940s and was a key player in the SDS, using the influence that he gained as a "professor" at NYC's Free School, to help guide student revolutionaries in their takeover of Columbia University.
In 1988 LaRouche was convicted of tax fraud in Virginia and sentenced to fifteen years in prison, eventually serving five. One of his attorney's was Ramsey Clark.
Enter Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski; a former member of the NSA in the Clinton administration, who left that agency in 1998 to take a policy analist [sub-Saharan Africa] position in the Pentagon.
Despite such limited bona fides Kwiatkowski became a prominent member of Clintonista dead-enders, authoring articles, sometimes under pseudonyms in a process that injected her highly politicized often fabricated and factually incorrect information, into the media food chain, starting low and then coursing upwards, progressing all the way to the apex carnivores at the Washington Post and the New York Times. All of this was done with the intent of scuttling the war on terror, especially the Iraq theater phase.
Kwiatkoski started her campaign while still on assignment at the Pentagon, using the internet portals established by Lew Rockwell, Lyndon LaRouche and Salon Magazine to disseminate her views.
"In a discussion with EIR last week, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, who served for ten months in the Near East South Asia (NESA) policy shop at the Pentagon, which housed the Office of Special Plans, described how OSP personnel, including Col. William Brunner...a former military aide to then-Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich...had regularly arranged debriefings of Iraqi defectors...set up through Chalabi and the INC. While CIA and DIA personnel participated in the debriefings, and sent the information to analysts, for cross-checking and evaluation, the OSP unit, led by former Cheney Vice Presidential staffer William Luti, funneled the undigested and unverified information right to Cheney's Chief of Staff, Scooter Libby...as if it were fully vetted intelligence. Cheney and Rumsfeld used this fake intelligence to bludgeon President Bush, Secretary of State Powell and others into going to war.
Lt. Col. Kwiatkowski provided her own eyewitness accounts of NESA staff meetings, where Luti boasted that he was taking his marching orders directly from "Scooter," an unprecedented violation of the usually harshly-enforced Pentagon chain of command." 4.
Kwiatkowski, taken raw, that is, uninterpreted by another author, is so bound up in conspiratorial thinking that her writings take on an jargon encumbered absurdity that has to be read to be appreciated:
"Neocon political thought...to the extent that it constitutes anything at all beyond cleverly cloaked power-mad imperialism under neocon rule...fancies itself to be actually applying some form of chaos theory. The idea of the reverse domino effect (Iraq becomes a self-ruling peaceful democracy in a single country, then the neighbors follow) is a part of this mantra. Unfortunately, the neocons, not being mathematicians or otherwise having any interest in bottom line truth, have confused the idea of inflicting chaos with their delicate butterfly wings in Washington with chaos theory as a mechanism of global development.
The four classes of dynamic behavior are revealing. Classes I and II are the ordered systems. Class I is governed by a "unifying principle or attractor" or doomsday scenario. Notable characteristics of the Class I include "progressive marginalization; contextually determined behaviour and absence of choice...traditional values (of ancestors) perceived as quaint and of little current relevance. Possibly the black hole of individual or collective self-righteousness." Psychologically, Class I is sometimes associated with the elderly, those near death, and Class I dynamic systems are always terminal." 5.
In a May 2004 column in National Review Online by AEI scholar Michael Rubin, he thoroughly debunked Kwiatkowski's imaginings and made clear the nature of the effort by intelligence operatives to sabotage the Bush administration's prosecution of the war on terror.
"To support his attack on the president, [Senator Ted] Kennedy cites Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski to make his claim that the Pentagon would "take a little bit of intelligence, cherry pick it, [and] make it sound much more exciting...." Kennedy describes Kwiatkowski as a "recently retired Air Force intelligence officer who served in the Pentagon during the buildup to the war."
Kwiatkowski did serve in the Pentagon prior to the war, as did I, as did approximately 23,000 others. But, Kwiatkowski was not involved in Iraq policy. Her reminiscences fall more into the realm of fiction than fact. I worked in the Office of Special Plans (OSP), charged with some aspects of the Iraq portfolio...One person I never met was Kwiatkowski. This should not be a surprising. Kwiatkowski was an Africa specialist who was the point woman for issues relating to Morocco. Just as I never attended meetings relating to Western Sahara, Kwiatkowski was not involved in Iraq policy sessions...By her own admission, she started writing Internet columns while still a Pentagon desk officer. But, she did not know many of the people about whom she wrote. The Office of Special Plans consisted of a small number of active duty military officers, reservists, and civilians; both Democrats and Republicans. Kwiatkowski got ranks and services wrong. In rank-conscience corridors of the Pentagon and among military officers, such things do not happen." 6.
Kwiatkowski's crackpot made-up reality flowed uphill, from Bizarro Universe outposts like LaRouche, Rockwell and publications like the Washington Report, to Mother Jones magazine and then on to more legitimate media organizations such the Nation. Along the way being pushed by committed leftists such as NPR fave Seymour Hersh, progressing then to regional papers and finally terminating in the citadels of politicized journalism in New York, Boston, DC and LA.
Another key inside operator was Larry Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff to Secty of State Colin Powell. Wilkerson engaged in a campaign alleging that VP Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld were running a cabal, to get around the bureaucracy, especially that of the State Department.
He was particularly critical of Undersecretary of Defense, Douglas Feith who he characterized as having, "carte blanche to tell the State Department to go screw itself."
"Larry Wilkerson, former chief of staff for Secretary of State Colin Powell, says the ["The Israel Lobby and American Foreign Policy," paper by the University of Chicago's John Mearsheimer and Harvard's Stephen Walt] paper does have flaws. But he has assigned it to his students at George Washington University and the College of William and Mary for discussion.
"I think it contains a lot of what I call the blinding flashes of the obvious," Wilkerson says. "But that said, [they are] blinding flashes of the obvious that people whispered in corners, not said out loud at cocktail parties, where someone else could hear you." [source, http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5353855]
He said the vice president and the secretary of defense created a "Cheney-Rumsfeld cabal" [invoking the symbolism of the conspiracy shrouded LaRouche fantasy, Children of Satan] that hijacked U.S. foreign policy. He said of former defense undersecretary Douglas Feith: "Seldom in my life have I met a dumber man." Addressing scholars, journalists and others at the New America Foundation, Wilkerson accused Bush of "cowboyism" and said he had viewed Condoleezza Rice as "extremely weak." Of American diplomacy, he fretted, "I'm not sure the State Department even exists anymore."
Destruction of the administration's credibility through selective leaks led to the public believing that preventing the imminent use of WMDs by Saddam had been the overriding goal of the Iraq invasion and that not finding large stockpiles of them delegitimized the war.
The truth of course was that Saddam's WMD hardware and weaponry was smuggled out of Iraq into Syria and Lebanon, largely by Russian operatives during the UN's tortuous and resolution punctuated run-up to the war.
We have this upon no lesser authority than former WMD hunter David Kay, as quoted in a January 24, 2004 Telegraph UK article:
"David Kay, the former head of the coalition's hunt for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, yesterday claimed that part of Saddam Hussein's secret weapons programme was hidden in Syria.
In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, Dr Kay, who last week resigned as head of the Iraq Survey Group, said that he had uncovered evidence that unspecified materials had been moved to Syria shortly before last year's war to overthrow Saddam.
"We are not talking about a large stockpile of weapons," he said. "But we know from some of the interrogations of former Iraqi officials that a lot of material went to Syria before the war, including some components of Saddam's WMD programme. Precisely what went to Syria, and what has happened to it, is a major issue that needs to be resolved." 7.
Fed a constant stream of disinformation, the public's perception that it had been lied to was understandable. This judgment unfortunately led to credible information linking Saddam, al-Qaeda [in the personage of Abu Musab al Zarqawi] and WMDs well before the 2003 invasion, being viewed by many as simply more Bush administration fabrications.
In April 2004 Jordan's King Abdullah revealed that an al-Qaeda plot involving sufficient amounts of WMD to kill 80,000 people, had been broken up. Jordanian authorities seized over 20 tons of chemical agents, over 50 different types including VX and Sarin gas. The king claimed that the weapons had been smuggled in from Syria, which seems reasonable given that the weapon cache was interdicted just 75 miles from the Syrian border.8.
The fact that Syria doesn't possess the technology to produce this class of weapons in those quantities suggests that Kay's assertion that Saddam's WMDs were dispersed to that country, pre-invasion, is spot on.
Additionally the Jordanian investigation into the plot indicated that it been planned by Zarqawi, while in Iraq and operating under the nose of Saddam, a full year before Coalition boots hit the ground in 2003.
Though not given wide coverage, Jordanian television broadcast the confession of one of the plotters, "In Iraq, I started training in explosives and poisons. I gave my complete obedience to Zarqawi." In the confession, partially rebroadcast on ABC's late night news the conspirator admits, "After the fall of Afghanistan, I met Zarqawi again in Iraq."
"Jordan's King Abdullah said last week that the five trucks originated from Syria and were intercepted just 75 miles from the Syrian border. Syria has long been suspected as a repository of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction." 9.
In an environment where information flows nearly instantaneously, success in war depends as much upon the ability to manage public opinion as it does on battlefield success, and it is in the former area where the Bush administration has maddeningly found itself stammering and unable to stop the hemorrhaging and untold damage that the leakers have wrought to its credibility.
Bush's inability and often unwillingness to deal effectively with the unprecedented level of disclosure of national security information has left it punch-drunk and gasping for air at a time when it should be on the offensive.
Taking the president off message and keeping him there has been largely accomplished by the army of Clinton moles, which is why such a key player as Beers' National Security Network, chiming in to provide substantiation to CAIR's baseless allegation, denying that Islamism exists and that there is no connection between it and the political ideology of fascism, is so serious.
It is often said that nothing involving the Clintons happens by accident and the NSN toting this line must be seen as a shot across the bow of GOP efforts to retain the presidency. Looking forward to the post Feb 08 primary landscape which will most likely find only the eventual Democrat and Republican nominees standing, the question comes down to how the Democrat candidate might deal with charges surely to be made by the GOP that they even lack a comprehensive vocabulary for discussing the greatest challenge of our time, let alone conceive of how that challenge should be handled.
In doing what NSN has done, the Clinton camp has skillfully planted the first seed which could well grow into the public perception that will justify going back to the bad old days in which terrorism was dealt with, and poorly at that, as a matter of law enforcement.
Clinton's people can't be unaware of the nature of the game they are playing and that CAIR will take not a small measure of aid and comfort knowing this obfuscation is coming from the putative Democratic nominee for president. Nor can they claim to be unmindful of the intense anti-Semitism of many of the players operating at this gutter level in left-wing politics, with whom they comingle.
The implications inherent in failing to actively engage on our behalf, as Daniel Pipes characterizes it, in the clash between Western civilization and barbarism, might very well allow the enemies of the West to succeed in what they have been prevented from doing since 9/11, the loosing of a nuclear attack somewhere in America, with disastrous and destabilizing repercussions.
The Clintons, thinking only of self-serving, short term tactical advantage ignore at all our peril the potential implications of what their minions have set in motion. What might seem at first blush to be an arcane philosophical question, upon any degree of reflection, looms large and menacing.
