Liberal Washington State Papers Endorse GOP Candidate McGavick in U.S. Senate Race - Huh?

October 23, 2006 - Seattle, WA - PipeLineNews.org - Following in the footprints of the Bellingham Herald, the Yakima Herald-Republic and other Washington State newspapers, the Seattle Times has formally endorsed conservative Republican Mike McGavick for Senate.
Reversing its endorsement six years ago of Maria Cantwell [D-WA] the Times explained their choice to unseat Cantwell as a decision that was best for the state, citing McGavick's past business experience and his split with President Bush on several aspects of the Iraq war.
This seemingly stunning about-turn, supporting a Republican candidate over a liberal has activists scratching their heads on both sides of the political tracks.
According to the most recent Rasmussen poll, Cantwell enjoys a nearly 20% margin [52% to 35%] over McGavik. Such a large - nearly insurmountable - lead fuels speculation that the liberal state newspapers, including the Seattle Times, are using the situation merely to posture, positioning themselves to defend against charges of liberal bias often tossed their way.
Such editorial shenanigans should be seen for what they are, token endorsements offered knowing that they will in no way actually result in GOP success at the polls in such a lopsided race.
While some might possibly see such maneuvers as cheap insurance, indemnifying them against future claims of leftist bias - such disingenuousness might at the same time generate further complications on the basis of their obvious intention to manipulate.
