Walnut Creek, California Mehserle Support Rally Draws Fire

July 19, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNew.org - A demonstration is scheduled to be held today between 2 and 5 p.m. in Walnut Creek, California, a liberal San Francisco 'burb.

The gathering is intended as a show of support for Johannes Mehserle, the BART policeman recently found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Oscar Grant, a young black man. It will take place adjacent the city's courthouse, which is located at 650 Ygnacio Valley Road.

Though there has been no evidence that the rally organizers intend anything other than a show of support for the police, the lefty blogosphere is already rife with condemnation and hints of violence.

Often absent in reportage regarding Mehserle is mention that Grant was a two-time convicted felon, "Horowitch said he met Grant, who served two short state prison terms for various felonies, when both men were incarcerated in the Alameda County Jail in Dublin "a few years ago." [source KTVU, http://www.ktvu.com/news/19523065/detail.html].

While no one would suggest that a previous criminal record legitimizes official violence, understanding that Grant was not just some hapless young black kid unschooled in the criminal world seems a reasonable aspect in assessing the Mehserle verdict.
